Using Filezilla

There is a difference between an SFTP and an FTPS site. Please make sure to check which one you are told to connect to.

Setup SFTP connection

  1. File > Site Manager
  2. Click "New Site" near the bottom and name the site (eg. Plainfield SFTP)
  3. On the right:
    1. Protocol = SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol
    2. Host = url that you were given
    3. Port = please use documentation given to you by the site provider (default = 22)
    4. Logon Type = Ask for password (recommended)
    5. User = enter username given
    6. Background Color & Comments = change as you see fit, not required but helpful if using multiple sites
  4. When asked if you want to save password, choose one of the 3 options
  5. Enter your password and choose whether to have it remember your password until you exit FileZilla or not
  6. If you receive "Unknown Certificate" dialogue box, read through and make sure "Common Name:" and "Alternative Name:" both say something similar to what the site URL is and press OK
    1. If you have concerns about this, please contact the site provider

Setup FTPS connection

Please contact Plainfield IT before connecting to an FTPS or FTP site.
  1. File > Site Manager
  2. Click "New Site" near the bottom and name the site (eg. Plainfield FTPS)
  3. On the right:
    1. Protocol = FTP - File Transfer Protocol
    2. Host = url that you were given
    3. Port = please use documentation given to you by the site provider (default = 21)
    4. Encryption = Use explicit FTP over TLS if available (unless told otherwise)
    5. Logon Type = Ask for password (recommended)
    6. User = enter username given
    7. Background Color & Comments = change as you see fit, not required but helpful if using multiple sites
  4. When asked if you want to save password, choose one of the 3 options
  5. Enter your password and choose whether to have it remember your password until you exit FileZilla or not
  6. If you receive "Unknown Certificate" dialogue box, read through and make sure "Common Name:" and "Alternative Name:" both say something similar to what the site URL is and press OK

Using FileZilla

  1. Once connected, open the file location on the right you are looking for
    1. This is the remote server directory
    2. You can use the folder listing on the bottom, treemap in the middle, or type in a path next to "Remote Site" at the top.
  2. On the left side, find the folder you would like to download the file to and open it (the default location is your personal user drive)
    1. You can right-click and choose "Create Directory" if you would like to create a new folder
  3. Go back to the right side and double click the file that you want to download
    1. If you would like to download multiple files
      1. Highlight all files you want to download
      2. Right-click any one of them
      3. Download
  4. Once files have finished downloading, EXIT FILEZILLA
    1. DO NOT Double-Click the downloaded files in Filezilla
    2. If you do, it will try to re-upload it to the server location.
  5. Go to the location where you downloaded your files and open from there
